È consuetudine organizzare feste e cenoni e, a mezzanotte, brindare e intonare "Auld Lang Syne", un'antica canzone tradizionale scozzeze il cui titolo significa "tempi passati". Si usa poi andare a trovare gli amici per brindare insieme al nuovo anno: il cosiddetto "first footing".
